Big Cats

Martin has always had a passion for big cats and he has been very lucky to take some great photographs of them. Each time he has visited the Masai Mara in Kenya, he has viewed lions, leopards and cheetahs.

Mara Wildlife

It is said that Africa can seize your soul and for Martin this has definitely been the case. The sights, sounds and smells make it a truly unique environment, of which he never tires.

African Birds

When Martin first visited Africa he was taken by surprise at the abundance of bird life. Many are brilliantly coloured and quite unlike any to be found in the U.K. In East Africa alone it is estimated that there are over 1200 species!

High profile species of bears, such as the polar bear, grizzly bear and giant panda (yes it is a bear!) are often the most photographed. Martin’s images in this gallery are of the lesser known European brown bear, which he photographed on the border of Finland and Russia.n

Black & White

Some photos need no colour to give the perfect image. This gallery contains a mix of images from Africa.

British Wildlife

Although Martin particularly enjoys photographing in Africa, he also loves British wildlife. The images featured here include otters and red squirrels from the Lake District, owls taken in his native Nottinghamshire and birds of prey taken around the U.K.

In addition to wildlife photography, Martin’s other passion is landscape photography. He has spent much time in the Lake District and Cornwall from where the images featured in this gallery come.

Wild Photography by Martin Fowkes

Welcome to ‘Wild Photography’ by Martin Fowkes. Martin is a seasoned photographer of African wildlife. He also organises and leads safaris to Kenya. He has been privileged to work with some of Kenya’s top guides in the Masai Mara. As result, Martin has learned about the habitats and the nature of his subjects in depth and has been able to get ‘up close and personal’ with some of the most fascinating – and potentially dangerous – animals on the planet. Martin has developed this website to give an insight into his photographic work and also to share his enthusiasm for wildlife and conservation.

A Short introduction

Martin has been interested in photography all his life. He has qualifications in a number of disciplines but his favourite areas have always been wildlife and landscape photography. Martin enjoys photographing in the UK especially in Cornwall and the Lake District. He has also visited Finland to photograph brown bears and India to photograph tigers. His passion, however, is Africa and he has spent a considerable amount of time in Kenya. During his visits, Martin has been privileged to have the services of Joseph, a Masai guide who is now also a friend. Joseph has proved to be an invaluable source of information and he has inspired Martin to encourage others to take an active interest in conservation. Martin firmly believes that the power and the reach of photography is an important tool in promoting the plight of endangered species and the magnificent, but often fragile environments in which they live. Martin supports organisations such as ‘Save the Rhino’ and the Guba Dida primary school in Kenya. He also works with ‘Lion Aid’ and has donated images which are widely used by them for publicity purposes and to raise funds for their invaluable work.
